WENTZEL COETZER: COURSE FOCUSED ON CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE
Prof. Wentzel Coetzer
Many people walk around wearing masks in an attempt to hide the pool of pain that lies just below the surface of their minds. This pain is so often related to events that occurred already prenatally, or otherwise at a very early stage in their lives. Because it was never dealt with, it eventually became like a septic wound on which one band-aid after another was applied over time. Childhood and teenage years are the most vulnerable stages to trauma, rejection and emotional injury, and therefore most of the emotional damage occurs during these phases of people’s lives. This course focuses in particular on these early life phases, and how to guide counselees towards healing. People who will particularly benefit from this course are youth pastors, youth workers, school counsellors, catechists, teachers, Sunday school teachers, social workers, and pastoral counsellors who especially focus on children and young persons.
The Year Course consists of the following modules:
- The impact of bullying on children and young people – Pastoral perspectives.
- Pastoral guidance of traumatized children.
- How to prepare children for future trauma – Pastoral perspectives (developing emotional intelligence).
- Emotionally wounded fathers – Pastoral perspectives.
- Emotionally wounded mothers – Pastoral perspectives.
- Emotionally wounded young people – Pastoral perspectives.

With this course, students also earn credits in terms of further study.
